That was the exact reaction we heard last week in Mbale City during our hands-on Black Soldier Fly farming training with the team at Munyalisa Women Empowerment Initiative (MUWEI).
We hear that a lot because most people first see insects, but after a few hours of training, they start seeing something else. Opportunity. Black Soldier Fly farming is not just farming. It is a real agribusiness.
MUWEI is a youth-led organisation with a bold mission. They want to help farmers reduce costs, improve their soil, and build stronger, more profitable farms. The problem they are solving is one every farmer in Uganda understands.
Animal and poultry feeds are expensive. Many farmers spend most of their money buying feed. At the same time, soils are becoming weaker. Yields are dropping. Profits are shrinking.
So what is the solution?
- Produce your own high-protein feed using Black Soldier Fly larvae.
- Use the same process to make rich organic fertilizer.
- Lower costs. Healthier animals. Better crops. More income.
This is why Black Soldier Fly farming is changing the way people think about agriculture. It turns waste into value. Kitchen waste, market waste, and farm waste become food for the larvae. The larvae become feed for chickens, pigs, and fish. The leftover material becomes fertilizer that brings life back to the soil. Nothing is wasted. Everything works together.
What stood out most about the MUWEI team was their mindset. They did not wait for perfect conditions. They had already built a breeding structure. They just needed practical knowledge. Actually, we conducted the training right inside their new facility.
The training focused on the following areas:
- How to start small and grow.
- How to manage breeding and harvesting.
- How to produce quality larvae consistently.
- How to turn the farm into a business that makes money every week.
The energy in the room was powerful. You could see the shift. From curiosity to confidence. From “Can this work?” to “When do we start?”
Across Uganda, more young people and farmers are moving toward smart agriculture like Black Soldier Fly farming. Not because it is trendy, but because it works. It is affordable to start, grows fast, creates income, and protects the environment.
The future of agriculture is not only about growing crops. It is about building systems that are smart, sustainable, and profitable.
