Prototyping a Scalable Black Soldier Fly Outgrower Model

In 2024, Ento Organic Farm Uganda Limited (EOF) was funded by Sustainable Access Foundation (SAF) to develop, prototype, and launch a scalable Black Soldier Fly outgrower model in the slum/ghetto area of Kamwokya, Kawempe, Kampala, Uganda.

Ento Organic Farm trained over 200 participants (60% youth and women) in the organic waste processing value chain, and conversion of organic waste into livestock feed and organic fertilizer, mediated by the BSF bio-technology.

EOF established 12 BSF mini larvae/composting units. This created opportunities, including meaningful jobs along the organic waste value chain, production of local, quality, affordable feeds and fertilizers, community mindset change towards sustainable waste management, and entrepreneurship.

Ento Organic Farm evaluated the scale-up model to focus on sales of three products: 30 kg of BSF eggs/month, 3 MT of BSF 7-DOL/month, and convert over 360 MT of organic waste into 72 MT of organic fertilizer/month. The model requires a total of 185 direct outgrowers, requiring UGX. 1,551,250,000 investments in fixed assets and UGX. 266,450,000/= operating costs. With revenue projections of UGX. 675,000,000/=, and an annual net profit of UGX. 16,929,495/=, the model breaks even in 7.
