In 2022, Ento Organic Farm signed a public-private partnership with Makerere University and established its first modern Black Soldier Fly pilot facility at Makerere Agricultural Research Institute, Kabanyolo (MUARIK).
The facility operates as a centre for research and innovation, a farmer training center, and a BSF larvae and organic fertilizer production facility. The research conducted at the facility focuses on creating solutions to challenges faced along the Black Soldier Fly waste value chain. The research has contributed to innovative methods of larvae rearing techniques, sustainable waste management, feed formulations, and designing new business models.
The center has developed comprehensive Black Soldier Fly training programs depending on farmers/client preference (availability and production target/capacity). These trainings range from a 5-day training program, a 3-month internship program, and a 6-month comprehensive training program.
At the same facility, Ento Organic Farm converts 45 metric tonnes of organic waste into 8 metric tonnes of organic fertilizer and 2 metric tonnes of BSF larvae per month. Currently, there are ongoing engagements to expand the operations to convert over 100 metric tons of organic waste into 20 metric tonnes of organic fertilizer and 6 metric tons of BSF larvae per month.
